Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes that the red card given to Alexis Mac Allister should be revoked, saying that his team has suffered enough consequences from the sending off. The 24-year-old Argentine midfielder, who was acquired in a £35 million summer transfer from Brighton, received a red card in the 58th minute of Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth.
Liverpool’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth
. This was due to an inadvertent cut on Ryan Christie’s foot, which resulted in him being sent off the pitch.
“It’s tough, it shouldn’t have been a red card. It’s a mistake and the punishment of playing 40 minutes with 10 men is punishment enough. We have to talk to the authorities“, said Klopp. “I asked Macca and he said: ‘He touched him, but not really’. If we have a list of points needed to give a red card, apart from contact, there are no other items marked” added the German coach.
Bournemouth took the lead early on with Antoine Semenyo’s goal in the third minute. Liverpool managed to equalize the score with Luis Diaz’s goal in the 27th minute and then went ahead with Mohamed Salah’s goal nine minutes later, after his penalty was initially saved. The score was 2-1 when Mac Allister was sent off. However, Diogo Jota scored the third goal for Liverpool just four minutes later, extending their unbeaten run at home in the Premier League to 13 games.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola considered the red card to be more like an “orange” card and expressed his dissatisfaction with the referees over the penalty that led to Liverpool’s second goal, when Salah took advantage of the rebound after Neto’s initial save.
If the decision to uphold Mac Allister’s red card stands, he will be absent from the Premier League games against Newcastle on August 27 at home, Aston Villa on September 3 and Wolverhampton Wanderers away on September 16.
