Fluminense coach Fernando Diniz expressed his dissatisfaction with the refereeing during the team’s intense 0-0 draw against Flamengo in the last 16 of the Copa do Brasil. In a post-match press conference, Diniz criticized referee Anderson Daronco’s permissive approach, pointing out that Flamengo committed 21 fouls without receiving a single yellow card. He emphasized the need for impartial refereeing in future matches and highlighted the cases in which he believed the Flamengo players should have been punished.
Diniz acknowledged Flamengo’s aggressive stance and greater intensity, but praised his team’s resilience in the face of challenges. He mentioned that the match was even at the end of the first half, with Fluminense gradually gaining momentum in the second half, before a red card changed the dynamic. Without going into details, Diniz refrained from discussing the controversial incident that led to the expulsion.
Regarding the team’s line-up, Diniz explained the tactical decision to field Gabriel Pirani instead of John Kennedy, citing Flamengo’s deliberate strategy of exploiting a specific flank. Despite the absence of the injured Alexsander, Diniz believed that Pirani’s performance justified his choice.
The coach also gave an update on Marcelo, who was substituted in the first half due to calf discomfort. Despite guaranteeing that it was a precautionary measure, Diniz revealed that Marcelo had felt similar pains before, and that the medical department was aware of the situation.
Fluminense’s hard-fought draw against their biggest rivals showed their resilience and tactical acumen. Diniz’s critical remarks about the refereeing showed his desire for fair play and equal treatment on the pitch. With the draw still undecided, both teams are now preparing for the second leg, where Fluminense will be hoping for a better result and a chance to progress in the Copa do Brasil.
