Manchester City made history by becoming the second English team to achieve the historic treble by winning the Champions League final against Italian giants Inter Milan. City came up against a formidable Inter side, who gave it their all, but ended up losing. Spanish midfielder Rodri’s sensational goal was the difference between the two teams. After the final, Pep Guardiola, who became the first coach to win three titles in two countries, spoke about his team’s achievements.
“I’m very proud of my players, they did very well. I can’t put my joy into words, I thank all my players, the support staff and the fans for their incredible efforts. Words cannot describe the pain Inter is feeling. But they are the second best team in Europe. I’m very happy with the result, but they had some great chances at the end. And if we had conceded the goal, we could have lost in extra time. We needed to win in Europe, and we did it against a great Inter team. We had to suffer, they’re physical, but sometimes we also need a bit of luck, which we haven’t had in the past.” said Guardiola.
Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan also gave his opinion on the events of the final, but ended up expressing his joy at having managed to win the title for the third time in what will possibly be his last season at the club.
“Today we made history. It was difficult for both teams. We weren’t at our best in the first half. We were hesitant. We knew we had to do better in the second half. It was probably a 50-50 game. We’re very happy that it went in our favor. We knew everyone was talking about the triplet. The pressure was there, but this team was built to deal with the pressure in the best possible way” said Gundogan.
Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi lamented the missed chances, but was undeterred by his team’s impressive performance. He praised the team and added that their mission would be to reach the top again.
“I gave my regards to the guys, they were brilliant. It’s a difficult time for us. We lost a final that we wanted at all costs, but we have to be proud. Yesterday I said that I would never swap the players I have for anyone, and today the whole world understood why. We stood strong together against a very strong team and conceded very few goals,” he continued. There are many regrets, but we have to be proud,” said Inzaghi. “I’d like to thank the fans, who have been wonderful and allowed us to get this far. Inter took to the field and played a serious, organized game. There is great regret. I saw that the players were suffering a lot, but that’s soccer. It’s our fifth final in twenty months, we have to be proud.” said Inzaghi.
