The tournament will take place in nine cities, with the qualifiers starting at the beginning of 2024.
The Union of European Football Associations has awarded Switzerland the rights to organize the 2025 European Women’s Championship. The Swiss have therefore secured automatic qualification for the major tournament, which will be held in nine cities across the country. Switzerland has been given the responsibility of running the tournament ahead of other European nations in Poland, France and a group of Scandinavian countries. The news was made official in an announcement made by the association following the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Lisbon on Tuesday afternoon.
This will be the first time in almost two decades that Switzerland has hosted a major soccer tournament. The last UEFA event held in the country was the 2008 European Men’s Championship, which Austria and Switzerland hosted together. Spain was victorious in that edition of the European Championship, the first of three major international trophies that La Roja would win, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, which took place between two European Championships (2008 and 2012).
Switzerland managed to beat France, which had proposed an eight-city tournament in its official bid. France had recently hosted the Men’s Euro 2016, in which Portugal emerged victorious. Poland was the first to submit its bid to host the Women’s Euro in 2025 and has scheduled a tournament in 10 cities, including the capital Warsaw.
Nordic nations Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden also entered the contest, with a joint finish. If “Nordics 2025” came to fruition, we would have a tournament of nine cities in four nations. However, Switzerland, which guaranteed the hosting responsibilities, included Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zurich, St. Gallen, Lucerne, Sion, Lausanne and Thun to conduct the competition.
Defending champions England will probably enter Europe’s premier international competition as favorites once again, after beating Germany in the 2022 edition of the tournament. Qualifiers for the 16-team event are scheduled to begin in early 2024.
