Where do we start? Let’s begin with Glasgow Rangers’ appointments of Thelwell and Co. We all remember when Andrew Cavanagh admitted publicly a couple of days ago, that he didn’t realise just how big Rangers were. Can Thelwell and Co. say the same?
At clubs like Everton, finishing 7th, 8th, or 9th is seen as a decent season. But what did they think when they came up here that we’d be happy sitting mid-table?
It’s become painfully clear that the players we’ve brought in simply aren’t up to Rangers’ standard. But my real concern runs deeper, when was the last time we weren’t sitting here debating the ability of our players?
This isn’t just about Thelwell and Co. It’s been years of misjudging players, under multiple managers and directors of football. It feels deep-rooted almost an institutional issue within the club. And dare I say it, only Steven Gerrard managed to build a team truly worthy of being called a Rangers side. So why are we getting recruitment so wrong?
At Everton, finishing 7th or 8th is decent. At Rangers, finishing second is a failure. That level of expectation, pressure, and scrutiny doesn’t exist in mid-table Premier League clubs and if you don’t grasp that from day one, you’re already behind.
Our recruitment strategy cannot be based on Premier League mid-table logic.
Rangers need players who can thrive under constant pressure, who treat every draw like a crisis and every defeat like a disaster. That’s a completely different psychological profile.
This problem didn’t start with Thelwell – it’s systemic. For years, Rangers have recruited players who looked good on paper, but not in the jersey.
Bounced between managers with completely different philosophies Managers like Caixinha, Gerrard, Gio, Beale, Clement, failed to build a sustainable squad identity or long-term plan.
The result? A revolving door of players and staff, each new era undoing the last. There’s been no continuity of the footballing DNA we always talk about.
And then there’s our captain. What’s happened to Tav? There’s no desire, no fight he looks completely drained of passion and disinterested. Yet every manager continues to pick him. I just don’t understand it anymore.
When will we finally see the Rangers we once recognised a team of players willing to fight for the badge and live up to what this club truly stands for? I’m disheartened, watching my life long club diminish as it has done we haven’t heard the Ibrox roar in a long time. When will it change? Can it change anytime soon? I have major doubts unfortunately!
