From what I’ve seen over the last few days, we want an exciting manager, with a high win percentage, who plays attacking football, is well regarded and knows what to expect when he comes to Glasgow Rangers Football Club. That’s not likely to happen. Anyone with those attributes is already in a job, so one of the main question in this article is; Where are we willing to compromise?
I don’t get the clamour for either Steven Gerrard or Barry Ferguson coming back. They know the club, but have poor records. Gerrard didn’t exactly set the world alight at Aston Villa, and neither did Barry, either before or while he was here. Neither has a good win percentage, neither is highly thought of in the managerial world. Gerrard would get respect, but I’m not sure Barry would (from all the squad anyway). I don’t think either is the answer.
Derek McInnes is another that would know the club, and has done okay at other clubs, but has never managed at the level of Rangers and has no real success to talk of. I think he’d steady undoubtedly us, but would he take us forward?
Sean Dyche has a roughly similar win percentage as Martin did (and Stevie G.), but he’s done it with multiple Top Tier teams, including some that were at the lower end of the league. He would know what is expected of him, and would be able to organise the team. He might not be a grandstand appointment, though.
Kevin Muscat is well thought of, knowledge of the club, doing well – but what can we measure that against? Is the Chinese league equal to (or better) than the SPFL, or is it more like English League 1?
Also, I don’t know enough about Rose, Rohl or Terzic (sp) to comment on them.
In addition, i’d use Manchester United as an example; Amorim was highly thought of throughout Europe and doing extremely well, but has in no uncertain terms, failed spectacularly at United.
So I ask again, where do we want to compromise in our search? I believe we need to keep our hearts out of this one, and let the brain do the talking. We need someone who can quickly, organise the team, and take us forward with the current team, which in my opinion does have talented players. For me, the next manager needs to be experienced and know what the expectations are. Outside of that, it’s all noise.
NB: Unfortunately, we’ll never know if Mourinho would’ve come to Govan, but maybe Sir Alex would’ve had a quiet word in his ear if we’d asked. 🙂
