As James Harden prepares for his 15th season in the NBA, he was recently asked about the league’s current anti-flopping rule. At first, Harden seemed to interpret the term “flop” as a criticism of his reputation, but after a few explanations, he realized that it was a serious question.
In response to this question, the former MVP made a somewhat cautious statement, saying that he doesn’t have much to say about the regulation. However, his initial impression that he was being accused of flopping gave the matter an unusual twist.
“Are you calling me a flopper?” Harden asked sports editor Mackenzie Salmon of USA Today Sports. Seriously, demonstrating a brief period of defensiveness. “They put the rule in a few years ago, you know, and then sort of abandoned it.” So, to be honest, it doesn’t bother me. I’m sure everyone in the league will go through it because it’s part of the game. If something happens, you shoot a free throw and move on.“
Harden, known for his skillful style of play, has been accused of flopping several times. However, the NBA star categorically denied this. Regardless of popular opinion, “The Beard” supported the new anti-flopping rule, emphasizing the benefits of gambling.
Surprisingly, Harden had already indicated his support for a flopping regulation. Harden had already approved the idea when the league established a previous version of the policy aimed at penalizing floppers in 2012.
“Everything’s fine. The boys can no longer struggle and get away with it.” Harden said at the time. “It had to happen at some point. Obviously, the league was fed up with it and decided to include it. I’m glad you’ve done that… I like the rule. That’s a stupid move, a brazen move“.
The new rule on flopping during an NBA game came into force this year. Exaggerated and unnecessary reactions considered excessive or theatrical are penalized with technical fouls, free throws and even expulsions to discourage flopping during matches. Harden’s support contributes to the league’s campaign for fairness and sportsmanship on the court.
