Norway – Spain – 0:1
Despite dominating possession, Spain were unable to break through the hosts’ defense for long. In the 20th minute, Morata denied his team a goal. After a rebound from a Norwegian defender, the ball rolled into an empty net, but for some reason the striker decided to shoot. As Morata was offside at the time of the pass, the goal was predictably disallowed.
A similar situation occurred at the start of the second half. After the shot, Gavi Morata was offside – the referees analyzed the episode for a long time, deciding that the player had not interfered with the goalkeeper. To be honest, the episode is very controversial. Note that the Spaniards have won their last four matches by a total score of 16:1.
The defeat deprived the Haaland team of the chance to progress in the group. With 10 points and a game in hand, they will never catch Spain and Scotland, who have 15 points and two games in hand.
Turkey – Latvia – 4:0
Group D leaders Turkey beat Latvia, who were left out of the quintet, and secured a place in the final section of Euro 2024. Yunus Akgün’s brilliant volley put Turkey on the road to victory, while two late goals from Cenk Tosun and one from Kerem Akturkoglu sealed their participation.
Wales – Croatia – 2:1
In another group match, Fulham midfielder Harry Wilson scored both goals for Wales. First, he brought down the goalkeeper, who was far from his goal, and then he scored with a header. The visitors managed to respond with a goal from Pasalic after Modric’s pass.
The result will ease the pressure on Wales coach Rob Page, with rumors that he would be replaced by Roy Keane. The win ended Wales’ seven-game winless streak against Croatia and gives them optimism about their chances of finishing top of the group.
- Turkey currently have 16 points (they still have an away game against Wales) and have already secured their place in the 2024 European Championship.
- Wales and Croatia have 10 points each. In head-to-heads, the Welsh have the edge (1:1, 2:1). They will have to play an away match against Armenia and host Turkey. The schedule for the Croats (bronze medallists at the last world championships) is easier – a trip to Latvia and a home game against Armenia, but even if they deliver a 100% result, everything will depend on Wales’ results.
- Armenia (7 points) still have a theoretical chance of second place. To do so, they need to beat their direct rivals and hope (Wales and Turkey) that they lose points.
It’s worth remembering that the top two finishers receive automatic qualification for Euro 2024. In addition to Spain, Scotland and Turkey, France, Portugal, Belgium and the tournament hosts, Germany, reached the final stage.
