Brazilian left-back Iago, who has spent the last five seasons in the German Bundesliga, is thinking about his future at Augsburg. The player, who was trained by Brazilian giants Internacional, has entered the final year of his contract with Augsburg. He has confirmed his interest in several big Brazilian clubs, including his home team, Internacional, and others as important as Flamengo, Palmeiras and Corinthians.
In a recent interview, the 26-year-old defensive star discussed his current situation at the German club and his future prospects. Although he didn’t explicitly confirm a return to Brazil in 2024, he was open to any opportunity. However, he remains focused on continuing his journey in European soccer.
He declared: “There has been some discussion and speculation about interest from Brazilian teams, including Flamengo, Palmeiras, Corinthians and Internacional. However, at the moment, I’m evaluating all the options and making careful decisions. My future in soccer hasn’t been decided yet and I’m considering all possibilities, whether in Brazil or Europe.“
Iago, a product of Internacional’s youth system, made his first-team debut in 2017. During nearly two years as part of Internacional’s senior squad, he made 80 appearances, scoring two goals and providing two assists. In mid-2019, he joined Augsburg, where he currently plays.
Over the course of his four seasons in Germany, Iago played more than 80 games for Augsburg, competing in both the Bundesliga and domestic cups. He highlighted the positive recognition he has received from the fans, the local media and the club during this period.
In the current Bundesliga season, the player has played four times, starting three of them. In the match against Mainz, he played the full 90 minutes. With a contract until the middle of 2024, the left-back can sign a pre-contract from the start of next year.
Regarding his physical condition and peak performance, Iago said: “I feel very good physically, but to say I’m at my peak means I can’t improve my performance, and I’m sure I can. I know I’m not a child anymore, but I still have a long way to go before I’m considered old (laughs). Normally, an athlete reaches their peak between the ages of 29 and 30.“
