In a thrilling match that left fans on the edge of their seats, the Brazilian men’s volleyball team won a hard-fought victory over Italy, the reigning world champions. The final score was 3-2 in favor of Brazil, with scores of 25/23, 23/25, 15/25, 25/17 and 15/11. This achievement not only demonstrated Brazil’s resilience and determination, but also secured their place at the next Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
The competition, held at the iconic Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro, was marked by a rollercoaster of emotions. Brazil started strongly in the first set, taking advantage of the Italians’ atypical performance. Ten of the 15 points Brazil scored in that set were caused by mistakes by the Italian team. Despite a late surge from the Europeans, Brazil managed to close out the set 25-23. Darlan Souza, a rising star in the Brazilian team, was the standout player, contributing four points, three from attacks and one from service.
However, Italy, known for their tactical skill, recovered in the second set. The Italians corrected their previous mistakes and gave Brazil a run for its money. In the set, Brazil’s coach Renan Dal Zotto made strategic changes, putting Bruninho in place of Cachopa. But the Italians, under the guidance of coach Ferdinando De Giorgi, exploited Brazil’s service errors and won the set 25-23.
The third set was a challenge for Brazil. The Italians took an early lead and, despite Brazil’s efforts to level the score, ran into problems such as blockages, defensive lapses and individual errors. Italy, seizing the opportunity, dominated and closed out the set with a decisive score of 25-15.
It was in the fourth set that Brazil showed their true mettle. Although Italy took the early lead, Brazil recovered, with Darlan leading the attack. His animated “jutsu” celebrations stimulated the fans, creating an electrifying atmosphere in the stadium. Lucarelli, another Brazilian star, made two consecutive aces, boosting the team’s morale even more. With better attacks and fewer errors, Brazil turned the game around and won the set 25-17, taking the match to a tie-break.
The tie-break was intense, with both teams giving it their all. Flávio opened the scoring for Brazil, but a service error by Darlan allowed Italy to score. Brazil, with their never give up attitude, managed to overcome the Italians and closed out the set at 15-11, thanks to an ace from Lucarelli that won the contest.
The hero of the match was undoubtedly the young prodigy Darlan. At just 21, he scored an incredible 19 points, with 16 attacks, one block and two aces. His exceptional performance in the pre-Olympics made him a fan favorite and the highlight of the Brazilian team.
In a surprising turn of events after the match, coach Renan Dal Zotto announced his resignation, citing family reasons and medical recommendations. Her departure marks the end of an era, but the victory of the Brazilian team guarantees that she will go to the Paris Olympics with spirit and hopes of winning gold.
