Santos FC’s star defender Joaquim is attracting a lot of attention from European soccer teams. However, the Brazilian club is currently facing challenges in negotiating any possible deal for the player.
Joaquim, who joined Santos this season, quickly established himself as the team’s first-choice defender. His impressive performances on the pitch caught the eye of clubs in Russia and Italy. Sources close to the player, who wears the number 28 shirt, expect official offers to arrive during the next transfer window in January.
However, Santos are currently in a position where they cannot get involved in any negotiations. The reason for this restriction stems from the club’s internal policy, which is in the last 90 days of president Andrés Rueda’s administration. Thus, all decisions regarding player transfers, both incoming and outgoing, need the approval of the Board of Directors. As Santos’ presidential elections are scheduled for December and Rueda is not expected to stand for re-election, the club’s hands are tied when it comes to player negotiations.
This isn’t the first time Joaquim has been on the radar of European teams. At the start of 2023, Russian club Krasnodar showed an interest in the defender and even discussed a possible price. However, these talks did not materialize. Interestingly, Santos also held talks with Krasnodar, but their focus was on acquiring Paraguayan defender Junior Alonso.
The acquisition of Joaquim from Cuiabá earlier this year cost Santos around R$17 million. The versatile player, who can also play as a right-back, is known for his speed, agility and ability to evade opponents. This season, he has made 28 appearances, scored one goal and provided three assists.
Although Joaquim’s talent is undeniable and has attracted interest from Europe, Santos’ current administrative situation prevents any immediate negotiations. The next few months will be crucial in determining the young defender’s future.
