Corinthians’ iconic left-back, Fábio Santos, has hinted that he is about to retire from professional soccer, setting December 31 as the possible end point of his illustrious career. At the age of 38, Fábio Santos is currently under contract with the club, but seems to be struggling with the idea of leaving the sport he loves after Corinthians’ recent elimination from the South American Championship at the hands of Fortaleza.
In a candid interview with SBT, Fábio Santos expressed his feelings about the decision to retire. He declared: “Fat chance, right? I didn’t want to confirm it now, right, I was putting it off until the end of the year so that maybe we could come away with an achievement, we’ve reached two semi-finals, but now it’s going to be difficult to find the strength and motivation to carry on. For my career, for everything I’ve built, especially at this club that I love so much, I’m trying to end it in the most dignified way possible.“
Fábio Santos is undeniably an idol of Corinthians fans, having played a key role in the team’s historic achievements, including the 2012 Copa Libertadores and the FIFA Club World Cup. Despite his advanced age, he has remained an integral part of the team for 2023, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the club that holds a special place in his heart.
Reflecting on his current situation, Fábio Santos admitted:“It’s difficult to speak with a hot head, now I’m trying to find motivation to finish this season and, who knows, end my career in a dignified way, given everything I’ve built within the club, I just apologize to the fans.” He acknowledged the challenges of this year and the emotional impact it had on him.
The experienced left-back also expressed his concern for the future of the club, saying: “It’s better for it to happen to me, who’s been through a lot, than to a boy. Now we have to get Corinthians out of this situation, it’s been a tough year, they’re a very good team.“
Fábio Santos returned to Corinthians in 2020, and his wish was to culminate his time there with a league win. However, the club is currently in 13th place in the Brasileirão, which makes the road to success more arduous.
