Botafogo, current leaders of the Brazilian Championship, have announced the departure of their Portuguese coach, Bruno Lage. The decision was made after just three months in charge, marking a brief and tumultuous spell for Lage at the helm of the Rio de Janeiro club.
Bruno Lage, previously known for his managerial roles at Benfica and Wolverhampton Wanderers, was hired at the beginning of July. He was seen as the successor to Luís Castro, another Portuguese who had led Botafogo to an unexpected top spot in the Brasileirão before leaving for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Under Castro, Botafogo had built up a significant lead of 11 points, the best since the last title won in 1995. However, during Lage’s reign, there was a worrying drop in the team’s performance in both domestic and continental matches.
Recent setbacks have included a disappointing exit from the Copa Sudamericana at the hands of Argentina’s Defensa y Justicia and a single point from the last four league games. The final straw seems to have been the 1-1 draw against Goiás, when frustrated Botafogo fans expressed their discontent by calling Lage “dumb”.
Although the club’s official statement praised Lage for his professionalism and commitment, it also highlighted recent unsatisfactory results, despite a promising start of 10 games unbeaten. Botafogo expressed its gratitude to Lage and his technical team, wishing them success in their future endeavors.
Behind the scenes, however, there seems to be more to the story. Talks between the club’s owner, John Textor, and the main players revealed significant tensions. The team’s leaders have expressed their discontent with Lage, especially after his decision regarding Tiquinho Soares in the match against Goiás. This internal conflict was not the only reason for Lage’s departure, but it undoubtedly played a key role.
With Lage’s departure, the responsibility now rests with Botafogo’s players. They have received a vote of confidence from Textor, who believes in the cast’s ability to face the challenges ahead. The players, for their part, expressed their confidence in interim coach Lúcio Flávio and veteran Joel Carli.
While Botafogo prepare for their next game against Fluminense at the iconic Maracanã, they remain seven points clear at the top. The fans and the club’s board are hoping that the team will regain their form in the quest for their first Brasileirão title in almost three decades.
