In a long-awaited return to form, Tiquinho Soares made his presence felt for Botafogo with a crucial equalizer against Goiás at the Nilton Santos stadium on Monday. The striker, who was sidelined for two months due to injury and started the match on the bench, gave his team and their fans a much-needed boost.
Diego Costa had been chosen over Tiquinho in the starting line-up, a decision that initially caused a stir. However, Brazil’s top scorer proved his worth when he entered the game and scored a sensational goal. After the final whistle, Tiquinho expressed his happiness at being back in goal and emphasized his physical readiness.
“We left sad because we were playing at home. The fans came out and supported us, but it’s worth highlighting this small point. I’m very happy, I’m starting again after a long time. I’m focused, the group is focused, and Botafogo will fight to the end for this championship“, said Tiquinho.
Responding to concerns about his recent injury, he added: “I’m fine physically, everyone knows I had a knee injury recently. It’s complicated. But I’m willing to help Botafogo and my teammates.“
Despite the joy of Tiquinho’s goal, Botafogo’s overall performance in recent matches has been less than stellar, with only four points taken from the last four games. This allowed their closest rivals, such as Bragantino, to close the gap in the league standings. After the match, coach Bruno Lage faced disappointment from fans who called him “dumb” because of the draw.
With regard to the criticism and booing from the fans, Tiquinho was diplomatic and said: “The fans wanted us to win. I think, as I said, this point will be important in the future.“
The match against Goiás once again saw the Nilton Santos Stadium packed to the rafters, with more than 34,000 Botafogo fans in attendance. The fans created an electrifying atmosphere before kick-off, with mosaics and 3D displays. Tiquinho Soares recognized the vital role of the fans and their unwavering support, even dedicating a hashtag on social media to him as “Tiquinho Day”.
“It’s very important (this support). Once again, I ask the fans to come and help us. The Brazilian Championship is very difficult. With their support, we’re stronger“, thanked Tiquinho.
Botafogo currently lead the Brazilian Championship with 52 points, maintaining a seven-point advantage over second-placed Bragantino. Their next challenge will be on Sunday, when they face Fluminense in the Maracanã, in a clash that will test their determination to secure the league title.
