In a thrilling encounter at the iconic Bombonera stadium, Palmeiras managed to secure a crucial 0-0 draw against Boca Juniors in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semi-final. Although it wasn’t Palmeiras’ most brilliant performance, their defensive efficiency kept the Argentinian giants in check. The stage is now set for an intense second leg at Allianz Parque, where Palmeiras boast an impressive record this season.
With the tie still open, both teams have their sights set on a coveted place in the Libertadores final. In the event of another draw, the result will be decided on penalties. Meanwhile, in the other semi-final, Internacional and Fluminense drew 2-2 at the Maracanã, adding to the excitement of the tournament.
The first half went to Boca Juniors, who dominated possession and created several chances, but struggled to score. The home side had 11 shots on goal to Palmeiras’ two, but the Palmeiras defense held firm.
Palmeiras surprised with a rarely used 4-4-2 formation, and the initial confusion this caused the Boca players led to some early chances, including a dangerous shot from Artur. Boca also had their moments, with Cavani and Merentiel coming close but failing to convert.
In the second half, both teams pressed forward in search of a goal. Palmeiras’ Raphael Veiga had a clear chance early on, while Boca threatened with a header from Fabra and a crucial save from Weverton. The match remained on a knife edge, with neither team managing to score.
As the tension mounts, Palmeiras will shift their focus to the Brazilian Championship, facing Red Bull Bragantino in their next match. However, all eyes will be on the long-awaited second leg against Boca Juniors, scheduled for October 3 at the Allianz Parque stadium in São Paulo, where the fate of these two South American giants in the Copa Libertadores will be decided.
