In a recent ranking of the NBA’s best power forwards for the 2023-24 season, emerging Kings sensation Keegan Murray came in 19th place, cementing his position as a bright player in the league. Despite his low ranking, Murray’s talent and impact on the court are attracting a lot of attention.
Last year, Sacramento Kings general manager Monte McNair was criticized for choosing Murray as the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft over highly-touted talent Jaden Ivey, who was picked fifth by the Detroit Pistons. McNair’s choice, however, seems to be paying off, as Murray’s first season was nothing short of spectacular. The rookie forward set a new single-season rookie record with 206 three-point shots and was named to the NBA All-Rookie first team.
Murray was ranked 19th in a recent Hoops Hype list. He outperformed newly acquired Utah Jazz forward John Collins, but fell behind players like Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges, who recently returned from a season-long suspension, and Washington Wizards forward Kyle Kuzma, who was heavily linked with a move to Sacramento but ended up re-signing with the Wizards.
Murray, 23, had an incredible first season, averaging 12.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game, as well as shooting 45.3% from the field and an incredible 41.1% from beyond the arc. Murray’s reputation as a reliable shooter who thrives under pressure and a dedicated defender who makes exceptional use of his body makes him an essential asset for the Kings.
Although Murray’s ranking may seem lower than expected, remember that he has only played one season. It’s hard to compare him with the league’s most experienced veterans. However, the opinion is that Murray has the potential to be an All-Star and could become the face of the Kings over the course of his NBA career. His influence on the team could be crucial in breaking the franchise’s 16-year postseason drought.
