Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana took the blame after his miss allowed Bayern Munich to go ahead in their Champions League Group A clash. United were 2-0 down at half-time and, despite a lively second half,
ended up losing 3-4
.
Leroy Sane scored the opener with a rather weak shot that Onana couldn’t stop, before Serge Gnabry doubled Bayern’s lead. Ramus Hojlund pulled one back for his side before Harry Kane scored a penalty to restore the two-goal lead. A late goal from Casemiro was in vain as Mathys Tel sealed the three points for Bayern Munich.
Speaking after the game, Onana, who arrived at the club in the summer window from Inter Milan but has been guilty of making several costly mistakes, insisted that United lost the game because of him and that it was one of his “worst games”.
“It’s difficult. We got off to a great start. After my mistake, we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation for us, especially for me, because I was the one who let the team down” Onana told TNT Sports.
“If we didn’t win today, it was because of me. I have to learn from it and be strong. I have a lot to prove. My start in Manchester wasn’t very good, it wasn’t what I wanted. This was one of my worst games” added the 27-year-old.
The Cameroonian has had to bear the brunt of the many mistakes he has made since arriving at Old Trafford. The former Ajax goalkeeper has conceded 14 goals in six games in all competitions.
Although Onana took the blame, he was also responsible for preventing Bayern from getting out of control, as he made five important saves.
Coach Erik Ten Hag later insisted that while Onana taking responsibility is a good sign, the whole team needs to take responsibility for the results. Manchester United have lost four of their last six games, with the defeat to Bayern their third in a row.
