Sergio Perez, the Formula 1 driver who represents Red Bull Racing, has publicly addressed and accepted an apology issued by Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s motorsport consultant. Marko was criticized for comments he made during an interview with Servus TV, which led to accusations of racism and xenophobia from fans and the motorsport community.
The controversy arose when Marko compared Sergio Perez’s performance and mentality with those of his teammate Max Verstappen and former F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. Marko’s remarks included the following statement: “Let’s remember that he’s South American and therefore not as focused as Max Verstappen or Sebastian Vettel. But racing is his forte, and he had a very good race. Overtaking three drivers, George Russell and the Ferraris wasn’t easy.“
These comments quickly provoked a strong reaction, with many condemning Marko for making what they considered to be racist and xenophobic statements. In addition, it was pointed out that Marko’s characterization of Perez as “South American” was factually incorrect, as Sergio Perez is Mexican and geographically from North America.
In response to the controversy, Helmut Marko issued a formal apology, acknowledging the offensive nature of his comments and emphasizing the inappropriateness of making generalizations based on nationality, race or ethnicity. Marko said: “I would like to apologize for my offensive comment and I want to make it absolutely clear that I don’t believe we can generalize people from any country, race or ethnicity. I was trying to show that Czech has had a fluctuating performance this year, but it was wrong to attribute this to its cultural heritage.“
Although Red Bull Racing and Sergio Perez have refrained from commenting on the matter publicly up to this point, Perez chose to address the issue during a media interaction ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix. Perez revealed that he had a private conversation with Helmut Marko, during which Marko apologized personally for his comments. Perez expressed that the most important aspect for him was Marko’s apology.
Perez also shared his perspective on the situation, saying: “Knowing Helmut as I do, I have a personal relationship with him. I know he didn’t mean it like that. And I personally wasn’t offended in the slightest. What he or I say in the media is different from what we discuss in person. We have a good relationship“.
Perez stressed that he was not personally offended by Marko’s comments, although he acknowledged that they could be considered disrespectful when taken in isolation. He stressed the importance of his personal relationship in understanding Marko’s intentions and accepting the apology.
