The long-awaited In-Season Tournament, scheduled for the 2023-24 season, could serve as a vital precursor to NBA expansion in Las Vegas, in a revolutionary move for the league. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, top NBA officials hope that the tournament games on the glittering Las Vegas Strip will serve as a litmus test for the city’s potential as a new destination for NBA franchises.
According to these officials, the NBA will have an unparalleled chance to evaluate the performance of the Las Vegas market and also the receptivity to professional basketball by organizing these games, offering a perspective on the viability of the city as a future center for an NBA franchise.
The relationship between the NBA and Las Vegas has flourished since the Summer League began in 2004, and Sin City continues to attract basketball fans with events such as the G League Showcase. The Las Vegas Aces are a notable club in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), and the 2023 WNBA All-Star Game has just taken place under the bright lights of Las Vegas.
The attraction of Las Vegas as a sports destination is obvious. The city hosted the Vegas Golden Knights (NHL) in 2017, the Las Vegas Raiders (NFL) in 2020 and is preparing to host the Oakland Athletics (MLB) in 2025, in an impressive sequence of events.
Earlier this year, NBA commissioner Adam Silver mentioned Las Vegas as a possible expansion site along with Seattle. The league’s desire in both areas was emphasized by Silver, but it was added that expansion talks would be put on hold until new media agreements were in place. The NBA’s immediate focus remains on the current broadcasting rights negotiations, which expire after the 2024-25 season.
Las Vegas, which is often ranked as the 40th largest media market in professional sports, might seem an unexpected location for NBA expansion. However, as an attractive venue for major sporting events, the city’s attraction is increased by a large number of hotels, casinos and entertainment facilities.
On the other hand, Las Vegas is the center, where the worlds of professional sports and gambling are closely intertwined. The NBA’s great interest in Las Vegas serves as a credo for the league’s loyalty to maintaining its pioneering role, taking advantage of the city’s vibrant and multifaceted sports culture.
