Botafogo coach Bruno Lage said he had resigned after the team’s bitter defeat to Flamengo 2-1 on Saturday night, in the 22nd round of the Brazilian Championship. The fact is particularly surprising given that Botafogo are currently top of the Brazilian top flight standings and, despite the defeat, Fogão are the undisputed league leaders.
In the post-match interview, coach Lage spent around ten minutes in the press room, but only answered one question. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager also expressed his concern at the incredible pressure the players felt as a result of the intense scrutiny his management was subjected to.
“When it comes to this constant scrutiny of my time at Botafogo, I think it puts an enormous burden on the players. And I won’t stand for it. There’s only one way to relieve you of this pressure, and that’s why I’m here in front of you. I haven’t talked to anyone yet, but I’ve put my position at the director’s disposal, at the president’s disposal” he said before leaving the press room.
Bruno Lage’s decision to step down as head coach has caused a shock in the soccer community. But after the press conference, the coach spoke to the club’s management. SAF owner John Textor, chief executive André Mazzuco and scouting director Alessandro Brito insisted that Lage remain as coach. The players also expressed their support for the coach. It’s worth remembering that under Lage, Botafogo have won four times, drawn six times and lost twice (in recent games).
