Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia put in an impressive performance with a resounding 6-2, 6-0 win over 15th-ranked duo Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi during the third round of the women’s doubles competition. Over the course of this season, Azarenka and Haddad Maia have established themselves as a potent doubles partnership, a fact highlighted by their triumph at the Madrid tournament earlier this spring.
As unknown opponents with a reputation for unpredictability, they won a commanding victory, securing their place in the quarter-finals. Their next challenge will be against 2020 champions Laura Siegemund and Vera Zvonareva in a crucial match that will determine who advances to the semi-finals. There could be a duel between two Brazilians in the semi-finals, as STEPHANIE/Brady beat Linet/Pera in the parallel quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Daniil Medvedev enjoyed a satisfying moment of redemption on Monday night at the US Open. Despite losing two consecutive head-to-head matches against 13th seed Alex de Minaur, the most recent of which took place last month in Toronto, the third seed and reigning 2021 US Open champion turned things around at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Medvedev made a surprising comeback, securing a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament, marking the last tournament of the season.
