After a two-month drought, Luiz Suárez has rekindled his goal-scoring touch in the Gremio shirt. The experienced striker was the star of the Tricolor’s resounding 3-0 win over Cruzeiro.
Cruzeiro 3-0
on Sunday night (27) at the Arena, in the 21st round of the Brazilian Championship.
The highlight of the match was when the Uruguayan maestro scored Grêmio’s goal in the first half. Suárez also played a key role in the team’s second goal, orchestrating an assist that led to a goal for midfielder Carballo. As the players left the pitch, Luis Suárez praised the Tricolor’s collective performance.
Speaking about his role in the team, Suarez humbly commented: “My duty is to contribute to the team’s success. Occasionally, this contribution comes in the form of a goal or an assist, but these fluctuations are part of the game. I keep my composure, because my focus remains on helping the team secure victories. This collective achievement is extremely important both for me and for Grêmio.“
Before this noteworthy display, Suárez’s most recent goal had come against Coritiba on June 25, during a 5-1 win at the Arena in the Brasileirão. In the current competition, Suárez has managed to score on five occasions, earning him the distinction of being Grêmio’s top scorer in the competition.
In a previous development, Luis Suárez made public his decision to leave Gremio ahead of schedule, renouncing one year of his original contract, but he vehemently refuted any intention of joining Lionel Messi at Inter Miami. Luis Suárez began his journey at Gremio with a two-year commitment from January. However, last month he made an impact by revealing that he had reached an agreement with the club to accelerate the end of his contract by a full year, ending it in December 2023.
Amid the speculation, Suárez found himself at the center of rumors linking him to a possible meeting with Messi and Sergio Busquets at Inter Miami. However, the Uruguayan striker immediately dismissed these conjectures. “I’m fully aware that Inter Miami spoke to Grêmio and Grêmio informed them of my contractual obligations. However, I can confirm that [o Inter Miami] was not directly involved with me.”
While the prospect of Suárez reuniting with his confidant Messi for the 2024 MLS season remains, his ability to make that move may be reduced by the severity of his knee concerns.
