Chelsea continued to spend money in the summer transfer window and the Premier League side added another Brazilian gem to their ranks, teenager Deivid Washington from Santos, in a £17.2 million deal.
Since new co-owner Todd Boehly took control of the club, the Stamford Bridge outfit have been spending freely and are also looking to invest heavily in young players.
With the new philosophy in mind, Chelsea signed 18-year-old Washington on a seven-year contract with an option to extend for another season.
At the start of the summer window, Chelsea also signed Angelo, Washington’s former teammate at Santos. The arrival of the two youngsters is seen as an effort by the club to prepare for the future.
Since Mauricio Pochettino agreed to take over as Chelsea manager, there has been an influx of players, with Brazilian Deivid being the ninth signing of this summer window.
In an interview with the club’s website, the youngster hoped to start playing as soon as possible, although it is not yet known whether he will be kept on or loaned out to get more exposure, like Angelo.
After signing a long-term contract similar to Washington’s, Angelo was loaned out for a season to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.
“I’m very happy to be joining a great team like Chelsea. I can’t wait to make my debut here at such a big club and score lots of goals and assists” said the versatile striker. He is the latest addition to Santos’ talent pool, although Deivid began his career at Grêmio before joining the club in 2016.
After excelling in Santos’ youth team, the teenager was promoted to the first team at the start of this season. In total, he made 16 first team appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals, which was enough to convince Chelsea to sign him for a modest fee.
Chelsea have spent more than 600 million pounds so far this window, bringing the total spent under Boehly to more than a billion dollars.
