During the match against Paraguayan team
Club Guaraní, in Asunción, Botafogo
encountered a worrying incident involving talented player JP Galvão. He collided with an advertising board at the Defensores Del Chaco stadium, resulting in an apparently painful injury to his right elbow. He subsequently had to leave the game in an ambulance to undergo imaging tests.
This happened at the start of the first half, before the 20-minute mark. Playing in his usual position of right-back, Galvão pushed forward much more than usual. The full-back got to the goal line and collided with the board as he attempted a cross. The team’s medical staff promptly attended to the player, who was clearly in discomfort.
Botafogo’s soccer division announced: “JP suffered a blow to his right elbow, causing extensive bruising. He was taken by ambulance for imaging tests. While attempting to deliver an aerial cross into the Guarani penalty area, the defender lost his balance and, as a result, collided with the advertising boards on the edge of the playing area. As the player’s discomfort was evident after his reaction, our medical team examined him immediately and determined that he was in no condition to continue on the pitch. He has received the necessary medical attention and the timescale for his return will be determined after we find out the extent of his injury.“
Botafogo are currently top of the Serie A standings in the Brazilian Championship, in a monumentally successful season so far. The Rio de Janeiro club are 13 points clear at the top of the Brazilian league and, with a win in two games against Guarani, are through to the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana. Botafogo will face Defensa y Justicia, from Argentina, in the quarter-finals, with the first leg scheduled for August 23. Justicia beat Ecuadorian club Emelec 3-1 in the round of 16.
