Newly signed 35-year-old midfielder Gary Medel gave Vasco a new lease of life in their Brazilian Championship clash with Athletico-PR at São Januário on Sunday. The experienced Chilean also had the honor of being named captain in his debut match for the Rio de Janeiro club. However, Medel’s debut ended in disappointment as Vasco lost 2-0 to Furacao.

“It’s a shame because in the second half we had four or five clear chances to score and I don’t think we deserved to lose like that. We have to keep working hard. We have ten days with the new coach, Ramón Vasco, who is doing a very intense and cohesive job. The team is young and we’ll get through this difficult phase” said Medel.
Interestingly, Vasco were showing signs of improvement in the game before Athletico opened the scoring and put a spanner in the works. The Brazilian club had chances to equalize, but lacked the finishing touch, and their opponents, unsurprisingly, took advantage to extend their lead.
Medel’s debut performance was above average, but it didn’t have any particularly surprising elements to highlight. The Chilean midfielder showed on the pitch the determination that has characterized him throughout his career. The veteran midfielder also made some strong tackles and was an important part of Vasco da Gama’s attacking sequences, as he hit a series of precise passes on more than one occasion. Overall, Medel’s performance was a positive sign for the club, despite the defeat. The team will be looking to overturn the result, but will be hoping that Medel’s performance is better than the one against Atheltico Paranense.
With the defeat to Athletico-PR, Vasco remain bottom of the Brazilian Championship with just nine points. Their next challenge will be against giants Corinthians on Saturday at the Neo Química Arena in São Paulo.
