The announcement that NBA star Kyle Anderson has legally obtained Chinese citizenship has caused excitement in the Beijing basketball community. The transfer could start a new chapter in the athlete’s career, allowing him to represent China on the world basketball stage.
In recent years, China has been eager to naturalize foreign-born sportspeople as part of its attempts to strengthen its national teams and achieve continued success. Anderson, who is from New York and supposedly has a Chinese great-grandfather, had already shown an interest in switching allegiance to represent China. By obtaining Chinese citizenship, he can now represent the country in international basketball matches.
🇨🇳Kyle Anderson on his Weibo:
“Hello, fans in China. This is Li Kaier. I’m so happy to announce that I would be representing China in the World Cup.”

The China Basketball Association (CBA) happily declared on its Weibo social media account:“With the promotion and support of all parties, Li Kai’er obtained Chinese nationality this morning,” using Anderson’s Chinese name. The CBA thanked all parties for their support, including Anderson’s family, as well as the fans and media for their long-standing interest in the Chinese men’s basketball team. The statement was accompanied by a picture of Anderson standing side by side with former NBA great Yao Ming, the director of the CBA.
The notification, however, did not specify whether Anderson had handed in his American passport, which is usually required in China because the government does not recognize dual nationality.
Anderson currently plays in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves. His club reached the first round of the playoffs the previous season, but were beaten by the eventual champions, the Denver Nuggets.
Anderson has been a prolific player throughout his NBA career, racking up incredible numbers in points, rebounds and assists. He is known for his passing, rebounding and exceptional defensive skills. Anderson’s quirky style of play, commonly referred to as “Slow-Mo” due to his deliberate approach, proved to be productive on the court, thanks to his high basketball IQ and playmaking skills for his teammates. He is 1.90 meters tall and weighs 230 pounds.
China, which now ranks 27th in the FIBA rankings, has been actively inviting international athletes with family ties or long-term residency connections to the country. Eileen Gu, a US-born freestyle skier who won big at the Winter Olympics in Beijing the previous year after obtaining Chinese citizenship, is one such case. Similarly, Nico Yennaris, a British-born former Arsenal footballer, obtained Chinese citizenship to compete for the Chinese national team.
Anderson’s naturalization contributes to this trend and has the potential to boost China’s international basketball chances. As he joins the ranks of Chinese sportspeople, aspirations and expectations for the country’s basketball capabilities in upcoming tournaments and championships increase.
The basketball world is now waiting to see how Kyle Anderson’s new Chinese citizenship will affect his career and the development possibilities that lie ahead for him as an international player.
Finally, Kyle Anderson’s obtaining Chinese citizenship is a big step in his personal career and in the Chinese basketball environment. Fans and analysts alike are eagerly awaiting the impact of his arrival in the Chinese national team, as he prepares to potentially represent the Asian superpower on the world stage. The addition of Anderson to the team, with his unique set of skills and knowledge acquired in a successful NBA career, could be essential to strengthening China’s competitive edge and improving the country’s position in the global basketball community.
