After Nycole’s injury, the Brazilian national team welcomed a new member, Angelina, to its ranks. At 23, the midfielder will now have the opportunity to play in her first World Cup. Her inclusion in the team came unexpectedly, as she was called up due to the exclusion of Nycole, who suffered an ankle injury. At a press conference held on Wednesday, Angelina shared her thoughts on the news concerning her Benfica colleague. While she expressed her joy and excitement at being called up to represent her country at the highest level of sport, she also made clear her disappointment at the exclusion of Nycole, who, according to Angelina, worked tirelessly to secure her place in the tournament.
“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, so the thrill of being in the top 23 hasn’t really kicked in yet. Yesterday I was very sad for Nycole because when you go through an injury, no matter what it is, you don’t wish it on anyone and I understand very well how she is feeling. It’s difficult, I’m sad for her and I’m going to take the opportunity to play for her too. We’ve been preparing for some time with training and the good part is coming. Now is the time to play, to make it happen. I think everyone is confident. The team is very well prepared, there’s a lot of quality, a lot of talent here. We’re very confident, regardless of who starts the game.“
The Women’s World Cup is already underway, with five matches played. Brazil have yet to play their first match of the tournament and will do so against Panama on Monday in Adelaide. The team will then travel to Brisbane, where they will face European giants France, before heading to Melbourne to play their final league match against Jamaica. Swedish coach Pia Sundhage expects the Swedish team to do well at the World Cup, as they aim to win their first World Cup trophy.
