Caroline Garcia and Luisa Stefani continued their impressive run in the women’s doubles at Wimbledon by securing a straight sets victory over the pair of Tímea Babos and Kirsten Flipkens. The French-Brazilian pair put in an impressive performance, winning 7-6 and 6-3.
Garcia and Stefani showed their skill on serve, firing six aces and not committing a double fault throughout the match. They maintained a high first serve percentage, with Garcia and Stefani at 71% and Babos and Flipkens at 69%. The French-Brazilian duo also had a strong winning percentage on their first serves, with 82%, while their opponents managed 68%.
Break point opportunities were crucial, and Garcia and Stefani took two of the four chances, while Babos and Flipkens failed to convert their two opportunities. In terms of reception points, Garcia and Stefani dominated, winning 26 points compared to Babos and Flipkens’ 15.
With this impressive performance, Garcia and Stefani advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles at Wimbledon, where they will face Hsieh Su-wei, from Taiwan, and Barbora Strycova, from the Czech Republic, on Tuesday, July 11.
Iryna Shymanovich and Oksana Kalashnikova emerged triumphant in a very tight match in the women’s doubles round of 16 at Wimbledon. The Belarusian-Georgian pair defeated the Belarusian-Brazilian duo Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Lidziya Marozava in straight sets, winning 6-4 and 7-6.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian-Belarusian duo of Beatriz Haddad Maia and Victoria Azarenka lost to the Russian-German pair of Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund in the second round of the women’s doubles. This happened after Haddad Maia suffered a back injury while playing in the women’s singles pre-quarter-final earlier in the day against Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan.
Haddad Maia made history last week with her victory over Sorona Cirstea, becoming only the second Brazilian woman in 47 years to reach the last 16 of the women’s singles at Wimbledon. Maria Bueno achieved this feat in 1976. Despite being seen as a possible opponent for the defending champion on Centre Court, Haddad Maia unfortunately suffered a back injury, forcing her to withdraw from the match, which ended up guaranteeing Rybakina a place in the quarter-finals.
