The enigma about Marta’s role in the FIFA Women’s World Cup continues. Despite coach Pia Sundhage’s reluctance to broach the subject during the call-up, the player herself didn’t shy away from the subject and expressed her desire to contribute to the national team in any capacity.
“I’m fully aware that I’m no longer the Marta of 20 years ago. But the most important thing is to see that, whether I’m on the pitch or not, we have athletes capable of representing our country with dignity.”
In Brazil’s recent friendly against Chile (a 4-0 final victory), which served as the team’s final warm-up before the tournament, Marta was on the bench. It wasn’t until the 29th minute, when Brazil had already established a comfortable lead, that she was called into action, replacing defender Rafaelle.
At 37, Marta is preparing for her sixth appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. She has represented Brazil in every edition of the tournament since 2003, when she was just 17 years old.
His most memorable campaign was in 2007, when he won the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe awards. Brazil reached the final, but failed to beat Germany and finished runners-up.
With Marta’s experience and illustrious career, her role in the upcoming World Cup remains a captivating story. As the tournament unfolds, soccer enthusiasts eagerly await his contributions, fully aware of the impact he can make on the pitch.
“It’s the result of a lifetime of hard work. Achieving and maintaining such a high standard is extremely difficult. I’m lucky enough to have incredible teammates in the national team, at my club and at the clubs I’ve played for” Marta recalled.
“When you dedicate yourself to your work with love and passion, everything becomes much easier. I’m extremely happy to be taking part in my sixth World Cup. I could never do it alone” he concluded.
Remember that the World Championship for women’s teams will be held from July 20 to August 20. Brazil were placed in the same group as Panama, France and Jamaica.
