Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka has left Arsenal and joined German side Bayer Leverkusen in a €25 million (£21.4 million) transfer. The 30-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Bundesliga club, ending his five-year spell with Arsenal. Xhaka’s departure was widely expected, as he had just one year left on his contract and expressed his desire to leave this summer.
During his time at Arsenal, Xhaka made 297 appearances and scored 23 goals. He played a significant role in the team’s success, helping them lift the FA Cup on two occasions, as well as finishing runners-up in the Premier League last season. Despite some ups and downs, including a controversial incident with fans in 2019 that saw him lose his captaincy, Xhaka’s contributions on the pitch have been valued by the club.
Bayer Leverkusen will benefit from Xhaka’s experience and midfield prowess as they look to compete in the Bundesliga and other competitions. The move also marks Xhaka’s return to the Bundesliga, having spent four years at Borussia Monchengladbach before joining Arsenal in 2016.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are on the verge of securing the signing of English midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham, in what could be a record deal. The Gunners are looking to strengthen their squad and find a suitable replacement for Xhaka as they continue their quest for success next season.
