Young guards Scoot Henderson (Portland Trail Blazers) and Amen Thompson (Houston Rockets) showed off their skills in an action-packed summer league game, but were forced to leave the court due to injury. Despite their excellent performances, the Rockets won by a small margin of 100-99.
Henderson, the Trail Blazers’ third overall pick, was forced to leave the game in the third quarter due to a right shoulder injury. He didn’t return to the court for the rest of the match. Thompson, on the other hand, was injured in the fourth quarter after falling awkwardly while trying to block a shot. Thompson, like Henderson, was unable to continue playing.
Thompson conveyed his dissatisfaction by saying: “It’s very sore”. The Houston Rockets’ medical team will determine the degree of his injury and his availability for future summer league games. Thompson will have an MRI scan on Saturday to determine the extent of his ankle injury.
Henderson, who didn’t speak to reporters after the game, was spotted walking around the media area with no obvious signs of injury to his arm or shoulder. Jonah Herscu, Portland’s summer league coach, didn’t give any updates on Henderson’s status, saying: “I haven’t talked to the coaches yet”. They were just being careful.”
Before their injuries, Henderson and Thompson displayed exceptional skills on the court, justifying their high draft picks by Portland and Houston respectively. Henderson, a 19-year-old athlete, finished with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists, showing size, speed and strength. Thompson, 20, showed his versatility in 28 minutes, with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 4 blocks.
Henderson’s selection by the Trail Blazers highlighted his priority in preparing for the future, despite rumors of point guard Damian Lillard’s desire to be transferred. Henderson’s excellent performance demonstrated his ability to break down defenses, create opportunities for teammates and finish near the rim. Despite struggling with his shooting at the end of the game, he stayed involved at both ends of the court, showing defensive skill as well as a persistent attacking approach.
Thompson, a 6’10” point guard, showed off his tremendous basketball IQ and playmaking skills, demonstrating why he is the elite player in the extension with the most draft picks. He exuded confidence and poise, often making solid judgements with the ball. His deft passing earned praise from the crowd and he looked comfortable on both sides of the court.
Henderson and Thompson’s head-to-head added an extra dimension of excitement to the competition, with both players fascinating fans and coaches alike. Henderson’s aggressive approach and defensive pressure on Thompson were praised by Herscu, who emphasized Henderson’s positive effect on the game.
Despite their tragic injuries, the efforts of these talented youngsters in their summer league debuts left a permanent mark. Fans will be anxiously awaiting the progress of Henderson and Thompson’s injuries, hoping for a speedy recovery that will allow them to continue showing off their skills on the court.
