In the last 10 years, Arsenal have played in the FA Super Cup five times and won it all (three times on penalties). City have played in the Super Cup six times in 10 years, losing four times. Manchester United are the leaders in the total number of FA Super Cup wins, with 21 trophies, followed by Arsenal with 17. Manchester City’s losing streak in Community Shield matches continued, extending the losing streak that began with defeats to Liverpool the previous season and Leicester City in 2021.
The pulsating match encapsulated the intensity of the start of the new season, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats until the very last moment. Although Community Shield matches are usually imbued with a “friendly” atmosphere, the London sun witnessed a dispute full of fervour. The pitch had its fair share of cynical fouls and strong challenges, underlining the high intensity of the match. This fervent atmosphere may have been a residue of last season’s fierce title race, which was eventually won by City.
The match saw the long-awaited debuts of Arsenal’s summer signings Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz. Arsenal put in an impressive performance in the first half, with their new additions adding depth and dynamism to the team. Although the attacking trio, led by Havertz, created several tempting chances, they were initially thwarted by City’s resolute defense.
The pace of the game changed after the break when Guardiola’s side began to assert their dominance and took the lead in the 77th minute. Substitute Cole Palmer displayed a moment of brilliance, hitting a left-footed shot into the top corner of the area, sending the City fans into delirium. Despite the result, the 21-year-old’s impact didn’t go unnoticed, earning him recognition as the youngest player to score in the Community Shield since Cesc Fabregas achieved the feat in 2005.
The referee added 8 minutes to the second half, but Partey and Walker were treated for a long time after the collision, so the referee added a few more minutes. And at 90+11, Saka played a pass to Leandro Trossard – 1:1. With half an hour gone, the game immediately went to penalties.
With tension mounting during the penalty shootout, both teams showed nerves of steel. Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale was the hero, denying Rodrigo’s penalty, while City’s Kevin De Bruyne saw his attempt bounce off the crossbar. Arsenal took their chances, with Martin Odegaard, Trossard, Bukayo Saka and Fabio Vieira converting their penalty kicks with confidence. Bernardo Silva scored for City, but Ramsdale’s save from Rodri’s shot ensured Arsenal won 4-1 in the penalty shoot-out, sparking scenes of celebration between players and fans.
While the soccer world adjusted to the introduction of extra time, both teams showed their ability to adapt and their determination in a match that offered few opportunities. Arsenal’s resilience and attacking prowess were on full display in the first half, with Havertz and his fellow debutants wreaking havoc on City’s defense. In contrast, Guardiola’s side found their rhythm after the break, with John Stones and De Bruyne leading the attack.
Ultimately, the Community Shield clash summed up the unpredictability and excitement that the new season promises.
