On Friday, Vasco announced the signing of striker Pablo Vegetti, formerly of Belgrano in Argentina. The player signed a contract with the club until July 2024 and was acquired for approximately R$5.4 million, according to a statement from the club. Vegetti will be presented to the Vasco da Gama fans on August 6.
Vegetti arrived in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday. According to a post on Belgrano’s social networks, the 34-year-old’s departure was approved at his personal request. The striker was the top scorer in the Argentine league, tied with Talleres’ Michael Santos on 13 goals. It’s interesting to note that Michael Santos was also heavily linked with a move to Vasco around a season ago.
Originally from Santo Domingo, Vegetti began his career at San Carlos and played for various clubs in Argentina, including Ferro Carril, Gimnasia, Colón, Boca Unidos, Instituto and Belgrano. Vegetti also had a spell in the Chilean first division, playing for Rangers de Talca.
In addition to Vegetti, Vasco have already signed eight other reinforcements in this transfer window and continue to keep an eye on the market. The club had aspirations for Brazilian-born Spanish striker Diego Costa, but the deal has cooled in recent days as the player has an offer from the Middle East. The former Chelsea striker had most recently played for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, but failed to make an impact, prompting the club not to consider extending his one-year contract.
However, Vasco are looking for a central defender, as well as an attacking midfielder, as part of a major overhaul of their squad to avoid relegation. The team is currently in last place in Serie A of the Brazilian Championship, with just nine points. On Sunday, the team will face Gremio at 4pm at the São Januário stadium, but without the presence of their fans, due to the sanctions imposed as a result of the violence at the stadium.
