According to rumors, veteran point guard Eric Gordon is being sought after by several clubs just one day after being let go by the Los Angeles Clippers. According to Kelly Iko of The Athletic, the Los Angeles Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers are all interested in Gordon during the imminent free agency season.
Sources close to him say that Gordon is looking for a permanent position in a team that is a contender for the title, which has aroused the curiosity of these interested teams. After being acquired in a mid-season trade from the Houston Rockets, the 34-year-old point guard averaged 11.0 points, 2.1 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 22 games with the Los Angeles Clippers. Despite his efforts, the Clippers opted to release him to save the $20.9 million contract he was owed for the 2023-24 season.
It’s interesting to note that the Clippers acquired Gordon just five months ago in exchange for Luke Kennard, John Wall and a protected draft pick, demonstrating their initial interest in the experienced player. Gordon’s ability to stretch the court, defend against taller guards and attack the rim caught the attention of the Clippers, who gave him priority over Kennard. However, financial factors ended up influencing his decision to break up with Gordon.
Although the clubs interested in Gordon have salary cap restrictions, they are eager to improve their playmaking rotations with veteran players. According to Spotrac, the Lakers, Bucks, Trail Blazers, Suns and Timberwolves are among the ten clubs with the least salary space available. Even so, these organizations appreciate the veteran playmaker’s experience and think he can help them succeed.
In addition, the Clippers’ decision to let Gordon go could be linked to their pursuit of Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden. According to recent sources, the Clippers are seriously considering acquiring Harden, which could mean freeing up space in his contract.
Gordon’s 15-year career in the NBA was defined by constant scoring, averaging 16.0 points per game on 42.9% shooting. Gordon is an attractive option for clubs looking for senior playmakers who can bring useful experience at a cheaper cost than Harden. The upcoming free agency period will decide Gordon’s fate, as clubs want to improve their teams and compete for the NBA championship.
