Brazilian soccer club Botafogo has announced Cláudio Caçapa, former assistant coach of Lyon-FRA, as the team’s interim coach. The decision was made shortly after the departure of Luís Castro, who accepted an offer from Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Caçapa, a former player with an illustrious career, will be assisted by Lucio Flavio, coach of the U23 team, during his tenure.
Caçapa’s appointment as interim coach is part of a collaborative partnership between Botafogo and Eagle Football Holdings, led by an American businessman called John Textor. The experienced coach has worked as an assistant at Lyon since 2015 and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team.
The coach is familiar with some of the team’s players, having worked with Marçal and Rafael during his time in French soccer. Marçal, Botafogo’s left-back, spoke highly of Caçapa, praising his achievements as a player and his ability to bring a winning mentality to his role as coach. The familiarity and positive working relationship between the two will undoubtedly benefit the team as they progress under Caçapa’s guidance.
During his playing career, Cláudio Caçapa represented clubs such as Atlético-MG, Lyon, Newcastle, Cruzeiro and Avaí. His most successful years were at Lyon, where he won the Ligue 1 title six times, as well as a French League Cup and five French Super Cups.
Botafogo’s fans and players are now relying on Cláudio Caçapa and Lúcio Flávio to provide stability and maintain leadership until a new permanent coach arrives. With Caçapa’s vast experience and the support of his coaching staff, the club will be looking to build on their recent successes and continue their quest for victory in upcoming games.
