Australia’s Alexander Volkanovski will face his Mexican challenger Yair Rodriguez in the main event of UFC 290, scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 8.
Both fighters have been absent from the octagon since UFC 284, an electrifying event in which Volkanovski lost his lightweight title to Islam Makhachev by unanimous decision. On the other hand, Rodriguez emerged victorious in his fight against Josh Emmett, with a second-round finish.
It promises to be an exciting featherweight title fight between the victorious Alexander Volkanovski and interim UFC champion Yair Rodriguez.
Volkanovski has won 25 times so far in his professional career, twelve of them by knockout and three by submission. During all this time, the Australian fighter has only suffered two defeats and has no draws on his record. In comparison, Yair Rodriguez has less experience with 15 wins, including five knockouts and four finishes, as well as three losses and zero draws.
Although Volkanovski is the older and more experienced fighter, Rodriguez has been fighting professionally for a little longer. This implies a significant difference in the number of professional rounds played between the two competitors.
In the co-main event, current flyweight champion Brandon Moreno will defend his title against the highly skilled Alexandre Pantoja in a rematch. This will be the first time Moreno defends his flyweight title against someone other than Deiveson Figueiredo.
For Alexandre Pantoja, the wait is finally over after waiting since 2017 for a shot at the bantamweight title. Pantoja already has a win over Moreno at UFC Fight Night in Chile in 2018. In addition to Moreno’s recent loss to Figueiredo, Pantoja represents the flyweight champion’s second most recent defeat.
On the UFC 290 prelims, Brazilian Denis Gomes will fight Yazmin Jauregui in the women’s bantamweight category, while another Brazilian in the fight, Vitor Petrino, will face Marcin Prachino in the light-heavyweight category.
