Damian Lillard’s future as starting point guard for the Portland Trail Blazers remains uncertain, but rookie Scoot Henderson’s status in the organization seems secure, indicating a possible changing of the guard in the franchise hierarchy.
According to reliable sources, the Blazers have shown no desire to trade their possible number 3 pick in the draft. Shams Charania, of The Athletic and Stadium, said that other clubs, including the New Orleans Pelicans, had asked about Henderson’s availability, but Portland had vehemently denied it.
“As of now, all indications point to Scoot Henderson staying with the Blazers,” said Charania. “I’ve been informed that Portland have shown no interest in transferring him, despite several teams having expressed an interest.”
Although Lillard has remained committed to the organization that picked him sixth overall in 2014, the star’s loyalty depends on how Portland manages the upcoming free agency period. Lillard wants to play among experienced veterans in a team capable of competing for a title as soon as possible.
According to the host of ESPN’s “Get Up!” program, Brian Windhorst, “I contacted Lillard’s team to find out if there had been a change of heart and the answer was absolutely not. Dame no longer wants to manage a young team; he wants to win immediately and is looking for a quick upgrade with experienced players.”
Although the Blazers have other options to acquire experienced players besides trading the number 3 pick, the idea of choosing a young prospect on Tuesday night could test Lillard’s loyalty to the organization.
However, it seems that Lillard intends to remain with the Blazers, proving his devotion to the organization that has fostered his career over the years, prioritizing team cohesion over pursuing titles elsewhere.
However, if Portland is unable to make any major free agent signings to improve the team’s prospects of reaching the finals, Lillard may consider exploring other options. The Miami Heat, among others, are prepared to take advantage of any possible trade request for the team’s star player.
If this trade demand materializes, the Blazers are prepared to guarantee the durability and strength of their point guard position, with Henderson developing into a potential successor to take the franchise forward.
