In response to the safety concerns that have arisen in recent Formula 1 races, the FIA is currently contemplating implementing stricter regulations regarding access to the grid. The catalyst for these concerns was an incident involving Brazilian footballer Neymar during the Spanish Grand Prix. As Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA has expressed concern about the presence of VIP guests, celebrities, team members and international media gathered on the grid before the start of races.
When the formation lap began at the Spanish Grand Prix, Neymar, who plays wingman for PSG, was seen standing near the grassy edge of the main straight. This incident, as well as the crowd invasion that took place during the Australian Grand Prix in April, were issues deliberated during a recent meeting of the World Motor Sport Council. The FIA is eagerly awaiting the publication of a report on the Australian Grand Prix, where spectators entered the track before the appropriate time.
Neymar’s presence in the aforementioned episode led the FIA to re-evaluate the access granted to individuals on the grid. With the growing popularity of Formula 1, there has been an increase in the number of high-profile people wishing to be present at the track before the start of the race. Currently, celebrities, guests and members of the media are allowed to join team personnel on the grid. However, the FIA is considering implementing limitations to improve safety measures.
Pending the release of the report on the Australian Grand Prix incident, the FIA intends to address safety concerns by implementing measures to reduce the risks associated with overcrowding at the venue. By re-evaluating the access granted to individuals, the FIA aims to increase the overall safety of Formula 1 races, in line with its commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all participants.
While the FIA awaits the conclusion of the report, further developments are expected regarding grid access regulations in Formula 1, Formula E and the World Endurance Championship.
