In a frenetic week of rumors and trade talks in the NBA, Chris Paul’s future took an unexpected turn. Phoenix Suns fans were on edge as Paul’s fate hung in the balance, but it was quickly resolved on Sunday when the franchise agreed to trade him to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Bradley Beal.
Although Chris Paul’s final destination remains unknown, sources say that the Los Angeles Lakers have the veteran point guard on their radar as part of their ideal plans for the summer. According to famed NBA columnist Marc Stein, the Lakers’ main goal in free agency is to sign Paul.
However, Paul’s position as a free agent is not set in stone. The Los Angeles Clippers are said to be interested in obtaining him through a deal involving many mobile contracts. In addition, there is a small possibility that he will choose to remain with the Wizards, although this is extremely unlikely.
If Paul is bought, the Lakers are seen as one of the favorites, if not the absolute favorite, to capture his talents. However, the kind of deal Paul is willing to accept will be key. If he agrees to the veteran minimum, that would be a fantastic bargain for the Lakers, with no major downside. A veteran’s minimum contract is risk-free and would allow the organization to ease the pressure on LeBron James during the regular season, while giving him extra rest to prepare for the playoffs.
It’s worth mentioning that there are certain concerns about supporting Chris Paul because of his theatrics on the court. However, considering his exceptional performance at his age, he could still have a significant effect if he signs a good contract.
The possibility of adding Chris Paul to the Lakers squad bodes well for the team’s future. If they added a player of Paul’s caliber, they would get a competent point guard capable of sharing ball control duties with LeBron James. This change would relieve the pressure on James and give him more opportunities to rest, thus increasing the Lakers’ chances of winning.
With the start of the NBA offseason, all eyes will be on Chris Paul and the Lakers, waiting to see if and how this possible union will affect the league landscape.
