In a thrilling Nations League semi-final clash, Spain pulled off a dramatic 2-1 win over Italy to book their place in the final against Croatia. Substitute Joselu proved to be the hero once again, scoring the decisive goal just two minutes from time as Luis de la Fuente’s side booked their place in the final.
The match began with Spain taking an early lead when Yeremy Pino scored in the third minute. However, Italy responded quickly with Ciro Immobile converting a penalty in the 11th minute after Robin Le Normand was penalized for a handball. The game continued to be back and forth, with both teams creating chances and looking to win the match.
In the first half, Davide Frattesi had a goal disallowed by the VAR for offside, leaving the teams level at the break. As the game progressed into the second half, fatigue set in, leading to a slight drop in quality from both teams. Álvaro Morata and Rodri came close to scoring for Spain, but it was Unai Simon who made a brilliant reaction save to deny Frattesi and keep Spain’s hopes alive.
With extra time approaching, Joselu, who had made his international debut just a few minutes earlier, seized his chance. A deflected shot from Rodri fell kindly into the hands of Joselu, who expertly slotted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma to secure Spain’s place in the final, winning 2-1. It was another landmark moment for the 33-year-old striker, who had waited 14 years for a call-up to the national team and had now scored three goals in his three appearances for Spain.
The decisive goal was scored after an attacking move involving Ansu Fati, Jordi Alba and Rodri didn’t work. However, the ball ended up going back to Rodri, who shot from the edge of the box. With a few deflections, the ball fell in front of Donnarumma, well within Joselu’s reach. A delicate touch was enough for him to take the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations both on the pitch and in the stands. It was a moment that left Joselu’s wife in tears, realizing the importance of her husband’s contribution.
Spain’s victory was well deserved, as the team showed resilience and determination throughout the match. Italy threatened to take the lead early on, but the video assistant referee came to Spain’s rescue, disallowing Frattesi’s goal. Despite struggling to control the game at times, Spain gradually regained the upper hand and imposed their style of play.
As a result of their hard-fought victory, Spain have advanced to the Nations League final,
where they will face Croatia, who beat the Netherlands 4-2 in extra time.
. Meanwhile, Italy will face the Dutch in the third-place play-off, both games scheduled for Sunday.
