Vasco’s difficulties in the Campeonato Brasileiro have been exacerbated by off-field problems, which have further dampened the club’s spirits. A serious cash crisis has resulted in several financial commitments being delayed, including the commission owed to manager Vinícius Prates for the acquisition of midfielder Jair from Atlético-MG in January.
As part of the negotiation, it was agreed that the manager’s commission would be paid in installments, with Vasco making monthly payments until the end of Jair’s contract in December 2025. However, so far no installments have been paid, with the club citing cash flow difficulties as the reason for the delay.
In response, Vinícius Prates’ lawyer, Carlos Licks Flores, announced plans to initiate proceedings before the National Dispute Resolution Chamber (CNRD), a regulatory body under the auspices of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). This measure aims to recover the outstanding payment. If the dispute continues in the sporting sphere, Vasco could face the repercussions of a transfer ban, which would effectively prohibit the club from registering new players.
Carlos Licks Flores expressed his concern about the situation, highlighting previous cases of non-payment by Vasco to his client, even after the transfer of Vinícius Prates to the Safeguard Fund (SAF). The club’s recurring problems in meeting its financial obligations have raised doubts about its ability to rectify the current debt situation.
However, it’s worth noting that Vasco are still up to date with payments relating to Jair’s transfer from Atlético-MG. The club acquired 85% of the midfielder’s economic rights for €2.9 million (approximately R$15 million), with the next installment due in August.
As the dispute unfolds, Vasco finds itself in a precarious position, struggling to resolve financial discrepancies and, at the same time, fighting on the pitch to regain its competitive edge. The possible transfer ban is a significant threat, further increasing the uncertainty over the club’s future in the Campeonato Brasileiro.
