In a remarkable display at Roland Garros, Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild achieved an important victory on Tuesday, beating world number 2 Daniil Medvedev in a captivating five-set match. Despite it being his first appearance in Paris, Seyboth Wild showed self-control and unleashed powerful shots during the intense encounter on the Philippe Chatrier court, causing an impressive comeback against the second seed. The thrilling contest lasted four hours and fifteen minutes, culminating in Seyboth Wild’s 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
At the current Roland Garros tournament, Casper Ruud, last year’s finalist, continued his impressive run by beating Swedish qualifier Elias Ymer convincingly 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. This win marked Ruud’s sixth in a row in the second round of the tournament.
Meanwhile, on a different court, Holger Rune showed his clay prowess with a hard-fought battle against American Christopher Eubanks. After enduring a challenging match that lasted two hours and 50 minutes, the 20-year-old Danish player emerged triumphant with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 victory in his opening match.
In another match, Yannick Hanfmann, from Germany, beat Thiago Monteiro, from Brazil, in a very tight match. The world number 65 won the match by a margin of 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 6-7 and 6-4.
In the women’s singles event, American tennis player Coco Gauff, who reached the finals in 2022, faced her first setback on her return to Roland Garros. She lost the first set against Rebeka Masarova from Spain. However, Gauff showed her resilience and pulled off an impressive comeback, winning the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 on the Suzanne-Lenglen court.
From a 1-1 draw in the second set, Gauff showed his dominance by securing seven consecutive games. In the middle set, she successfully broke Masarova’s serve to take a 3-1 lead. During the second and third sets, Gauff, the sixth seed, took eight chances and broke Masarova’s serve five times. Her remarkable performance allowed her to complete the turnaround in a total playing time of 1 hour and 46 minutes.
Brazil’s Rafael Matos and his Portuguese partner Francisco Cabral faced Australian duo Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata in a thrilling men’s doubles match, in which the former beat the 15th seeds in straight sets 7-6, 7-6.
