In a surprising turn of events, Abel Ferreira, the current coach of Palmeiras, has entered the radar of Paris Saint-Germain as a possible candidate for the position of coach. Speculation arose after French newspaper L’Équipe published a list of possible targets for the PSG coaching job, with Ferreira’s name among the candidates mentioned.
Although not considered the main option, Ferreira’s close relationship with PSG director Luis Campos has sparked interest from the French club. The two have a long-standing connection, dating back to when they worked together at Penafiel. Ferreira openly acknowledged Campos as a trusted advisor, seeking his guidance throughout his career.
Although Palmeiras fans may have been worried by this news, the Brazilian club remains optimistic that Ferreira will stay until the end of his contract in December 2024. In fact, Palmeiras is already thinking of extending its association with the Portuguese coach until December 2027, in line with the possible re-election of president Leila Pereira.
Ferreira himself expressed his commitment to honoring his current contract and spoke fondly of the Palmeiras project, as well as his successful adaptation to Brazilian soccer. Since his arrival, Ferreira has achieved remarkable success, securing eight titles for Palmeiras, including two Copa Libertadores wins in 2020 and 2021.
While PSG continue to evaluate their options, other notable figures from the technical scene have also been linked to the job. José Mourinho, current coach of AS Roma, Thiago Motta, of Bologna, and Marcelo Gallardo, ex-River Plate, are among the names mentioned as possible candidates.
The future remains uncertain, as PSG has yet to make an official decision on its coaching staff. While the soccer world anxiously awaits PSG’s next move, Palmeiras fans hope that their beloved Abel Ferreira will remain in charge and lead the club to new glories in the coming seasons.
