The experienced coach was confident that his team would break their losing streak with a win against Fluminense.
Newly appointed Corinthians coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo expressed his satisfaction with the slight improvement in his team’s performance after last week’s draw with Flamengo in the Brasileirão. Luxeburgo had yet to taste victory in his six games in charge and, after suffering four defeats, the coach chose to consider the two draws as an improvement in performance. After the departure of former coach Cuca, Luxemburgo took charge of the team, without much success, but he believes there is “light at the end of the tunnel”. The veteran coach is sure that the team will improve and believes that positive results are coming.
“I’m pleased because the team had the attitude without the ball and the attitude to play. This is a soccer team. It’s no good scoring with your eyes, you have to try to steal the ball. For me, it was the best game under my command and it shows that we’re on the right track. Now we have an important game in the Libertadores, we’re going to prepare well. Against Atlético-MG, I didn’t like it when we conceded the first goal, because we conceded it. And there was a knockout game. 1-0 is much better than 2-0. But that doesn’t mean it’s over, it’s just become more difficult. I see the team recovering in the Brasileiro, a championship with points in a row. Now we’ll see in the knockout stage.“
The coach said that he drew his conclusions from Corinthians’ performance in the draw, especially in the moments when they didn’t have possession of the ball. Luxemburgo said his team showed a hunger for possession and didn’t let themselves be dominated by Flamengo, a sign that the chaos will soon turn into order. The 71-year-old coach said that, as well as being tactically prepared, his team also needed to be mentally prepared and assured the Corinthians fans that good results will come sooner or later. He had faith in the quality of his players and was confident of a win in Monday’s game against Fluminense.
