The deduction for Juventus in relation to its transfer activities has been reduced from 15 points to 10
On Monday, Juventus suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat against lowly Empoli in their final Serie A match after being deducted 10 points in a new ruling over their allegedly questionable transfer activities.
Juventus, who discovered that they had received a revised decision shortly before kick-off, are currently in seventh place on 59 points, one point behind AS Roma, who are currently in sixth place and a considerable margin behind fourth-placed AC Milan, having played 36 games. Italian center forward Francesco Caputo’s penalty in the 18th minute gave Empoli the lead after Arkadiusz Milik brought down Nicolo Cambiaghi in the box.
Empoli defender Sebastiano Luperto increased Empoli’s lead just a few minutes later, and Caputo scored twice to extend the already humiliating scoreline just after half-time. French midfielder Jean Daniel Akpro made a brilliant run to get into a threatening position, before passing the ball to Caputo, who converted with a shot that flew past a helpless Szczesny. Juventus winger Federico Chiesa scored with just five minutes remaining. However, Roberto Piccoli sealed Empoli’s victory with a late goal when the score was 4-1.
In the frantic opening minutes of the game, Milik hit the crossbar after a corner for Juventus, while recent Europa League hero Federico Gatti had a goal disallowed for a foul in the build-up to the goal.
However, following Milik’s foul on Cambiaghi, Empoli were awarded a penalty, after which the visitors capitulated to a shock defeat. Caputo’s successful conversion of a 12-meter penalty was just the start of Allegri’s problems. Three minutes later, defender Luperto doubled Empoli’s lead with a shot into the top corner of the net from a set-piece.
Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic and defender Gleison Bremer had chances for Juve in the first half, but were unsuccessful as Empoli did not concede. The missed chances and sloppy defending will be what Allegri will be looking to resolve, as his team’s defeat all but confirms their absence from the Champions League. They have a chance, as the revised penalty gave them a five-point boost.
