With the conclusion of the NBA Combine and the approach of the NBA Draught, the New Orleans Pelicans now have the 14th overall pick and several personnel problems to solve. In the absence of a viable option to exchange for an experienced player, the team’s management is exploring several candidates who can contribute immediately.
The Pelicans’ decision-makers and coaching staff are struggling with a fundamental question: why sign excellent players if they won’t get enough playing time? This became clear when Dyson Daniels and Kira Lewis Jr. received irregular minutes, especially towards the end of the season. Taylor Hendricks, a powerful and versatile wing recognized for his skill set and wingspan who can convert seamlessly to the NBA, stands out on their mid-lottery recruiting board as the draft approaches.
When Hendricks enrolled at UCF, he wasn’t considered a unique prospect, much less a lottery pick. However, his excellent performance put him in consideration for a top ten pick, making him an attractive option for the Pelicans.
New Orleans desperately needs players who can play in several positions. In a recent interview, Denver Nuggets coach Mike Malone said: “In the playoffs, you can’t be a specialist”. Specialists don’t take part in the playoffs”. Adding a reliable second line of defense behind Herb Jones would take some of the load off Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson. Hendricks fits the criteria wonderfully, able to rebound, stay involved offensively and finish plays, without being a high-usage ball handler, allowing the team’s offense to flourish.
Hendricks demonstrated his ability during his rookie year at UCF, leading the team in both field goal percentage (47.8%) and three-point shooting percentage (39.4%). He attempted 4.6 three-point shots per game on average, hitting three or more in eleven contests. In addition, the 19-year-old scored in double figures in 28 of the 34 games and had 15 or more points in 21 of them. Hendricks demonstrated his ability to spread the court and score down low with two career-best 25-point games. Given the importance of the 14th overall pick, he’s a viable alternative.
The New Orleans Pelicans will carefully consider their options with the 14th overall pick as the NBA draft approaches. Taylor Hendricks appears to be a strong candidate, with a consistent skill set and the ability to have an immediate effect on the team’s performance.
