Real Madrid won their home game against Getafe, not only to push their opponents to the brink of relegation, but also to postpone what looks like the inevitable coronation of rivals Barcelona. Real Madrid are currently 11 points behind Xavi’s men, but a win for the Blaugrana against Espanyol will confirm the title, their first after four seasons. However, it looked as though the celebrations in Catalonia would begin immediately after the Madrid game, but a goal from veteran Marco Asensio put an end to the euphoria. The former Mallorca player scored from distance with twenty minutes remaining to level the scores. Curiously, it is not yet known what the player’s future will be, given that he has had an impressive season. A player who was thought to be on his way out, Asensio proved his worth with 15 goals in the league season.
Meanwhile, Villarreal beat Athletic Bilbao 5-1 and missed the chance to consolidate seventh place, which could mean missing out on a place in Europe next season. Dani Parejo, the team’s standout performer, orchestrated Villareal’s attacking sequences on a day when Capoue wasn’t at his best. The two talented youngsters from the 2021 Europa League winners, Baena and Jackson, scored twice and did everything they could to keep the chance of a top four finish alive.
In Italy, Romelu Lukaku defended his loan spell at the San Siro with an influential performance, scoring twice in stoppage time to secure Inter’s 4-2 win over Sassuolo. Sassuolo veteran Domenico Berardi had a goal disallowed for offside, before providing the assist for Brazilian Matheus Henrique’s header. The Italian’s performance wasn’t enough as his team dropped to 13th place. In other matches, Milan lost 0-2 to Spezia, while Lazio drew 2-2 with Lecce.
