The Brazilian team had not passed on a certain part of the transfer fee to the Uruguayans.
Palmeiras will have to deal with some off-field problems in the coming months in relation to the transfer agreement with Peñarol URU. The Brazilian Serie A runners-up had signed full-back Joaquin Piquerez from Club Atletico Penarol in the summer of 2021 for an undisclosed fee. The fee was supposed to be paid by Palmeiras in installments, but a complaint filed by Atlético Penarol claims that the club has not received payments, amounting to 1.4 million dollars, or 5.4 million reais. Peñarol notified FIFA of the problem, and world soccer’s governing body responded by sending a notice to Palmeiras instructing it to pay the outstanding amount within 45 days, under penalty of sanctions.
The complaint filed by Peñarol has now revealed the details of the transfer, which mentions a value of R$4.9 million and a fine of R$492,000. The Uruguayan club initially discussed the matter with Palmeiras, but rejected the Brazilian team’s offer to settle the matter out of court. Peñarol’s complaint to FIFA has created transparency around the issue and, although the Brazilian club was not satisfied with the public disclosure, it will pay its debt on time to avoid future complications.
If Palmeiras does not acknowledge its debt and decides to ignore FIFA’s instructions, it could be subject to sanctions that include, among others, the imposition of additional fines and a ban on registering new players and members of the coaching staff, as well as renewing the contracts of existing members. Premier League side Chelsea have had to deal with similar problems in the past, after breaches of regulations resulted in a ban on any activity in the transfer market. According to various reports, Palmeiras would like to avoid such conflicts or sanctions and is prepared to pay the amount determined by world soccer’s governing body. They have been given 45 days to complete the transaction, but the process is expected to be completed well before the deadline.
