West Ham United manager David Moyes has declared that there is a “good chance” that captain and midfielder Declan Rice will leave the club at the end of the season. The 24-year-old’s contract runs until 2024, but Rice has refused to sign an extension, despite the Hammers’ best efforts.
The situation sparked interest from several big English clubs, such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool, and many experts praised Rice’s abilities.
Moyes said that the Hammers want to keep Rice, but are aware that this may not be possible. Rice, an England international, has risen through the ranks at West Ham and has represented the Hammers 243 times in all competitions since 2017. He has also been an integral part of the Hammers team this season. Moyes’ comments come amid reports that West Ham are making plans to replace Rice if he decides to leave.
Many soccer experts, including former players and analysts, have praised Rice’s talent, and some believe he should be playing for a Premier League club or even in the Champions League. Although Rice’s position as a defensive midfielder is occupied by Rodri at Manchester City, former player Owen Hargreaves believes that Rice could be a starter at any other Premier League club.
Meanwhile, former West Ham striker Joe Cole believes Rice will be an invaluable asset to any European team, and former striker Glenn Murray thinks Rice is a world star who deserves to play in the Champions League.
