In doubles, the Brazilian-Spanish pair of Matos/Vega-Hernandez lost to the Spaniards Carballes-Baena/Landaluce 2-6, 3-6.
Second seed Daniil Medvedev won his first match at the Madrid Open, advancing to the third round after beating Andrea Vavassori 6-4, 6-3. With four titles won this season, all on hard courts, Medvedev currently leads the men’s circuit and is 32-4 this year.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fourth seed, also advanced to the R32 after recovering from a deficit to beat Dominic Thiem 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5). According to the match statistics, Tsitsipas managed to hit 39 consecutive first serves from the end of the first set until the start of the third.
Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime were knocked out of the Madrid Open singles tournament in the second round on Saturday. Auger-Aliassime, coming from Montreal, lost in three sets to Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, with the score 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5). After Lajovic won the first set, Auger-Aliassime responded by winning the second set convincingly. However, Lajovic ended up winning in the tie-break. Meanwhile, Shapovalov succumbed to China’s Zhang Zhizhen 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (1).
In the women’s draw, second seed Aryna Sabalenka secured a 6-4, 7-5 win over Camila Osorio, who is currently ranked 115th. Sabalenka, the reigning Australian Open champion, is aiming to regain the title she won in 2021.
Throughout the match, the Belarusian held the lead for most of the time, with the exception of a brief lapse in her performance after Osorio needed a medical time-out while trailing 4-1 in the second set. Although Sabalenka found some difficulty with her serve, she managed to close out the match.
Meanwhile, home favorite Paula Badosa eliminated sixth seed Coco Gauff with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win. Liudmila Samsonova also beat former French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
In other matches, Irina-CamiliaBegu defeated Shelby Rogers 7-5, 6-2, while Elise Mertens was victorious against Jule-Niemeier 6-3, 6-4. On her 16th birthday, Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva continued her excellent form by securing a two-set victory over Magda Linette 6-3, 6-3.
